My small cabin kitchen, formerly a rental unit, was in sad shape, probably at least 30 years old, so I assumed I would eventually need to remodel it. However, I discovered that it would take a lot of effort and expense, and special effort to make it look "old" to match the rest of the house. Additionally, lower cost cabinets that I would be likely to afford were made with particle board, and look pretty junky. So, I decided to try sanding and restaining the cabinets and doors, which are all wood, and finishing them with a high-gloss polyacrylic, making sure to enhance the varigated colors. I replaced the hinges and handles with simulated antique white gold, and resinstalled the "baby latches" to prevent stuff from falling out during earthquakes. I also replaced the wallpaper and countertop, but that is a separate effort.
